What Azad strives to achieve

Azad empowers cisgender and transgender individuals from marginalized communities through gender-just skills education, livelihood generation, leadership development, and community-driven initiatives. Through a feminist lens, Azad emphasizes inclusion, respect, secularism, accountability, and transparency to create an equitable, gender-just society.

Azad works with disadvantaged women in India to achieve economic empowerment through non-traditional livelihoods, enhancing their social standing and decision-making abilities. This is achieved through a gender-just skill education framework that ensures holistic development through transformative skill training for cis and trans women while addressing gender barriers within families, communities, markets, and policies.

Azad creates supportive environments for women by engaging communities and addressing gender-based violence (GBV). GBV significantly impacts women’s participation in the workforce, affecting their access to education and economic opportunities in both private and public spaces. Acknowledging the link between GBV and professional growth, Azad actively works to prevent and combat these issues. It collaborates with policymakers and stakeholders in South Asia and globally to expand access to opportunities and advocates for non-traditional livelihoods, advancing economic and social equity for resource-poor women in India.

The 2023 Kamla Bhasin Award Ceremony

The Kamla Bhasin Award, instituted by Azad Foundation in collaboration with the National Foundation for India and iPartner India, celebrates and empowers women’s leadership in India. The award acknowledges outstanding work by individuals and organizations across various sectors that have had a significant impact on the advancement of women’s rights. This includes honouring women (cisgender and transgender) engaged in non-traditional livelihoods (NTL) who inspire other women to pursue NTL careers, as well as men (cisgender and transgender) who work towards challenging toxic masculinity across South Asia.

By highlighting exemplary efforts, the award inspires action, encourages collaboration, and keeps the spirit of Kamla Bhasin’s legacy alive. It serves as a catalyst for further progress towards achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in South Asia.
